To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), the competition was held in the home country of FIFA.
Notable first included the first television coverage, and a new seeding system involved in the group stage, where the two highest ranked teams in the world standings in each group would not have to play each other.
There were sixteen teams in the tournament in four groups. The top two teams from each group went through to the quarterfinals, but strangely there would be extra time played in the group stages for any game ending in a draw.
In the quarterfinals the favourites Hungary beat Brazil 4-2 in a match which would become infamous as the Battle of Berne. The holders Uruguay knocked England out of the tournament, also by 4-2.
The Wankdorf Stadion in Berne hosted the final watched by 60,000 people. the match was a rematch of a first round game which Hungary had beaten West Germany in. Hungary took an early lead and looked to be in control after going 2 goals up. However West Germany had equalised by half time and went on to win the trophy with a second half winner.
With 11 goals scored the Hungarian Kocsis set a record for goals scored in the tournament.
